MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAY JEWELRY MAKING PROCESS

Material Selection

Select shells with uniform luster, such as abalone shells, white butterfly shells, and mother-of-pearl, to ensure the finished product has a brilliant, flowing luster.

Shell Preparation

The shell surface is hard and brittle. It undergoes multiple processes including grinding, slicing, and thinning until it is as thin as a cicada’s wing, allowing the soft, warm iridescence to shine through.

Pattern Cutting

Cut the thinned shells according to the designed pattern to create various exquisite decorative motifs.

Flat Pasting

On the raw lacquer wood base, apply a primer coat of lacquer first, then paste the shell pieces in sequence, allowing the lacquer and shells to bond tightly.

Repeated Lacquering

After pasting, the surface is repeatedly lacquered, air-dried in a humid environment, and polished. The lacquer layers securely encapsulate the shell pieces.

Polishing & Finishing

Finally, through meticulous grinding and polishing, the iridescent sheen of the shells emerges subtly from beneath the lacquer, shifting with light and shadow to create a unique sense of three-dimensionality and dynamic beauty.
